When traveling to new destinations a person should really try and embrace the local culture. Go where the natives go, see what the locals see, and eat what the locals eat! In Puerto Rico, there are many different types of food that you should try, lechon, empanadas, plantains, etc, but the most iconic meal that is representative of Puerto Rican Culture is: Mofongo.
Mofongo is made from green plantains which are fried, combined with broth, garlic, olive oil, pork cracklins, and usually combined with some type of meat (chicken, crab, shrimp, or pork). The plantains are mashed, the other ingredients are combined, the mixture is formed into a mound around the meat being used. |
