1. What is the bio bay?
The bio bays in Fajardo, Vieques, and La Parguerra are some of the most amazing phenomenons in the world, but what is bioluminescence? To put it simply: the water glows. Many of the photos you see online are photoshopped so don't expect to see the glow from miles around, but there is a very noticeable glow in the water when the organisms found in the water are disturbed.
The glow is caused by microscopic dinoflagellates that use their bioluminescence as a defense mechanism to shine light on other animals that predators can eat instead of them. In other words, dinoflagellates glow so that predators can see other organisms to eat! The ecosystems that protect these dinoflagellates are extremely fragile and there are not many left in the world. But there are 3 in Puerto Rico (Fajardo, Vieques, La Parguerra, and Jamaica)! |
